That’s the irony of a rainy day,
\nEither the potential rainbow seeps into your heart,
\nOr the rainstorm does.
\nThey’re puppets, controlled by your heartstrings,
\nContingent on the presence of a co-puppeteer,
\nOr the absence thereof.
\nOr so they say.
\nOnce upon a time, when I believed in fairy-tales,
\nI believed their words.
\nAnd many monsoons passed,
\nSome pink, some gray,
\nTill my belief in their words disappeared
\nWith my belief in fairy-tales.
\nI distinctly remember that rainy afternoon.
\nI was humming a song in the pervasive gray.
\nThe sky rattled with the windows,
\nAnd in the occasional blinding flashes of light, I saw incessant drops hit the pane.
\nDrops of water.
\nOf thought.
\nOf emotion.
\nWere tugging at the heartstrings,
\nCreating a frenzied dance
\nOf the rainstorm.
\nThe puppeteer played the puppet nimbly,
\nEasily, with only one hand.
\nHis other hand was occupied,
\nWith numerous bags-
\nOne for his material possessions,
\nOne for his dreams,
\nOne for his fears,
\nFour for his uncertainties,
\nOne for his insecurity,
\nAnd one for the road he hadn’t taken.<\/p>\n

For he was a travelling puppeteer.
\nWhen his shows were over, and the equipment was packed,
\nThe free hand latched onto the co-puppeteer’s,
\nWhen there was one,
\nAnd he took refuge in her heart.
\nOtherwise, he continuously travelled and performed,
\nTill fatigue threw him into fitful slumber.
\nOn this afternoon, he had been performing since dawn;
\nExhaustion crept into his limbs,
\nBut he knew not how to stop.
\nHe knew not what else to do with his free hand.
\nSuddenly, as though struck by lightning, he stopped.
\nHe packed up his equipment.
\nHe had made up his mind.
\nFor now, he would perform no more.
\nHe shifted four of his bags to his unoccupied hand.
\nNow, there seemed to be an equilibrium in his pace.
\nA confidence of being able to pull the strings
\nOf both the rainbow, and the rainstorm,
\nIn the same show.
\nBut he had to continue his journey.
\nHe was, after all, a travelling puppeteer.<\/p>\n
